Joyner Lucas began to rise to fame with his breakout hit, “I’m Not Racist” and went viral with his controversial music video. Since the song, he has continued his success with a collaboration with Chris Brown as well as dropping his single “I Love” in 2018.
“I Love” starts off with a lighter intro that gives the portrayal that the song will be slightly calm. This song instantly hooks you in with the line, ” Get away from me. If I was you I’d watch what you say to me” and continues to do so as the hook starts. After a few moments, Joyner punches in his lyrics with the bass that accompany’s the hook as well as the remainder of the song to show that this song is quite the opposite of calming. The Overall concept of the song is his love for success and his rise to fame. Even though this is a popular concept in many Hip hop songs, the overall sound is different enough to make it unique.
Joyner’s flow is more exaggerated and elongated in “I Love” than many of his other songs that are normally choppy and quick. As a listener, it allows us to see the versatility in his rapping as well as feel like Joyner is speaking to us and telling his story. As far as his actual lyrics, he has some witty lines, but most of the lines are straight forward. There aren’t really any metaphors and very few double meanings, which there is nothing wrong with. A listener should not have to think through a lyrics hidden message all the time when they are listening to a song.
Unfortunately, this song did not receive much air play and did not get the recognition that it deserves. It has a hard hitting beat, good flow, decent lyrics, and a catchy hook, but is unrecognizable to many. Overall, it is an enjoyable song to listen to and leaves you bouncing your head to the beat and wanting more.
